In preparation for the SPI National Portrait Award , artist and art lecturer Emma Willemse will present a series of interactive lectures on portraiture in visual art. Ranging from the rich tradition of portraits in the history of art to contemporary and alternative approaches in portrait rendering, the focus of the theoretical course will cover the many and varied devices used by artists to generate meaning in portrait expressions. The series is aimed at art lovers, established artists, emerging artists, students and anyone interested in the role of the portrait in contemporary art practices.
The SPI National Portrait Award, offered by Sanlam Private Investments and the Rust-en-Vrede Gallery, has reinvigorated interest in portraiture in South Africa. The award will carry a prize of R100 000 for the winning award and will be presented in August 2013 for the first time. Log on to www.spiportraitaward.co.za for more information and entry forms.
