Christian Eedes Reports

We celebrate two of South Africa’s finest wine cultivars with the help of wine experts.

We believe that quality wine is a big part of our South African heritage. We have therefore partnered with acclaimed wine expert Christian Eedes to select our country’s top ten Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon wines each year and to publish the results in the annual Christian Eedes Report. The Christian Eedes Reports make it easy for you to enjoy the finest wines from these two cultivars.

Wine of the Month

Simonsig The Garland 2008

In spite of new crazes in the SA wine world, there are still many wine connoisseurs who think our wine makers – especially from the Stellenbosch area – are doing exceedingly well in producing cabernet sauvignon. One of the reasons is that our climate allows the grape to mature properly on the vine.

Simonsig recently released The Garland 2008 – 100% cabernet originating from the slopes of Simonsberg. This wine is confirmation that SA cabernets can compete on the world scene. The wine has a fruity nose, followed by mouth flavours of mulberry and cherry. The wine-making process yields a wine with a sound structure that will richly reward those who are prepared to wait a few years before opening.

The Judging Process

Instead of being all-inclusive, Christian keeps his wine selections small and focused with only 50 to 60 wines.

  1. Christian makes his selection based on the wines’ performance in recent local or international competitions. He also considers the producers he believes to be the best in their field based on his knowledge and experience.
  2. He then directly contacts the winemakers for permission to evaluate their wine.
  3. The judges hold a blind tasting and give the wines a mark out of 20 rate them according to the 5-star system . Each wine also receives a detailed tasting note.
  4. Wines that receive an average of 17 points or 4 ½ stars or more goes through a second blind tasting round to determine the top 10.
  5. The results are reviewed by independent auditors.
