Shannon Vineyards near Elgin is perhaps not as well known as some of the older estates in the area. However, the owners have in a relatively short period established a reputation for meticulous viticulture practices. The grapes for the Triangle Block Semillon 2017 are sourced from unique, low-yielding Table Mountain sandstone soils.
On the nose the wine is complex, with an array of flavours ranging from musk, hay and lime zest, and a distinctive flintiness. These flavours repeat on the palate. The lees maturation provides a full mouthfeel, yet it’s dense in the mid-palate, while the acidity ensures that the wine fills the entire spectrum. An element of spice and lime with a not-uncommon hint of saline provides some old-world charm.
The complexity of the wine invites the drinker to ‘explore’ and linger on the next sip. The Triangle Block Semillon 2017 is undoubtedly a food wine, but it’s an intriguing and most enjoyable drink on its own.
