When I tasted the Kanonkop Pinotage 2015, it was served blind (I didn’t know what I was being served). The wine still appeared young in the glass – it displayed a deep red colour and not the usual browning around the edges associated with a slightly older red wine. The nose was extremely complex, but still with an abundance of fruit. There were compelling notes of plums, cherries, earth and spice. The primary fruit flavours presented themselves on the palate.
So far, nothing out of the ordinary. However, the fruit was pure and clean, and despite the obvious weight on this full-bodied wine – the alcohol content is 14.8% – the fruit and the natural acidity provide a perfect balance. There is zero flabbiness, and the aftertaste is persistent and long. It was simply a joy to drink – on this occasion, it was paired with exquisitely prepared oryx fillet. The class of this wine will sustain it for at least another five to 10 years.
We’re in the investment business, and I would strongly recommend investing in this wine – if only for the sake of pure indulgence. In my view, the Kanonkop Pinotage 2015 is a world-class wine. Although this vintage is no longer freely available, the vintages that came after 2015 display similar classy characteristics. I for one am certainly going to stock up whenever the producer releases a new vintage.
